The Online And Written Exams

The multi-choice online exam

The first part of the C&G 2391 Inspection and Testing exam is a multiple choice online exam.

The exam consists of 40 questions and the available time is 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The subject of this online exam is wide-ranging, from the 18th edition of Wiring Regulations to Guidance Note 3 on Inspection and Testing, to GS 38 and Health and Safety.

However the questions are considered to be basic and relatively easy.

The written exam

The C&G 2391 written exam is a closed book exam. With 6 highly detailed questions to answer within the 1 hour 30 minutes time limit. Delegates are required to complete the exam in hand writing, using the correct terminology as per BS 2371 and going in to great detail about how they have come to the particular answer for each of the questions.

The written part of this exam comprises two sections, Section A and Section B.

About Section A.

Section A consists of 3 questions.

This section covers the following areas:

  • Preparation for inspection and testing,
  • Inspection,
  • Testing.

The nature of the questions expected ranges from Health & Safety and basic electrical principles to specific questions about design, inspection, testing and certification of electrical installations.

About Section B.

In Section B the delegate will be given a specific scenario (e.i. domestic dwelling with a detached garage) from which 3 big and detailed questions will be asked. These 3 questions represent about 60% of all the possible points gained, so it is extremely important to answer these questions as correctly as possible.

The questions refer to specific inspection and testing areas and the delegate will have to describe in great detail the processes required to gain the correct answer. The questions are also structured so that they build on each other. In other words, the result of some earlier question might be the subject of a later one. If the delegate makes a mistake with the first question, the later one will result in a wrong answer altogether. Generally the delegate can expect difficult and highly detailed questions about the design, inspection, testing and verification processes. Be sure to familiarise yourself with the content in BS 7671 and especially GN3 for Inspection and Testing.

At the end of our Guide to the Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations qualification you will find past exam papers for the C&G 2391 exam with which you can use to prepare yourself for. Even though some of these are for the now obsolete C&G 2391 2394 and C&G 2391 2395 qualifications, they are still an excellent way to practice for the real Inspection and Testing exam.
